We did a
lot of preparation for this trip. First, we put together
a small pharmacy to cover all kinds of ailments, both
internal and external. We then made sure we were
current with all the recommended shots. Next we made
several lists to include all of the miscellaneous items
that we thought we might need (flashlight, binoculars,
all the camera paraphernalia, rain gear, etc.). We were
restricted as to the size and weight of the luggage so
tried to stay well within the limits so that we could
have room for souvenirs. We read several books. We both
enjoyed Red
China Blues by
Jan Wong. Glenda reread Wild Swans by Jung Chang, a biographical account
of three generations of Chinese women from concubine to
the Red Guards.
We traveled with friends, Steve and Lynne Malley. Before
retiring, Glenda worked with Lynne for several years. Steve
is also a retired Federal Employee. Several weeks before
leaving, we had dinner with a couple they knew who had been
on a very similar trip a couple of years earlier. They were
very helpful and hearing their experiences added to our
anticipation of the trip.
The above map shows the cities that we stayed in (described
in the narrative below), and the 4-day cruise on the Yangtze
river that we took from Chungking to Wuhan. The map was
gotten from Microsoft Encarta CD Rom Encyclopedia.
